Spring is finally here. Last week was cloudy with light rain. The temperature is not warm enough for locals to sun bath, the highs are touching 20° C. Late in the afternoon I found few people on Hilton beach catching the last rays of the afternoon sun, on lounge chairs under the hotel. Today is the first day of Passover, for Israelis, its the first day of spring (March 30th, 2010.) This year, winter was a warmer and rainier than it has been in a few years. Tel Avivians say that they live with the sea at their backs. They go out to the beach when the weather is warm, rest of the time they ignore the beach. Tourists can't figure out why anyone would waste such beautiful beaches even on a cool spring day. There is a saying in Hebrew "what you see from there you do not see from here", two people do not see the same thing, even looking at the same thing. If you come to Tel Aviv from Berlin or London 20° C weather and clear skies is a perfect day for lying on the beach. If you live here, it takes 10° warmer weather and a free Saturday morning to do the same thing. In a month the beaches will be half full. By early June tourists will arrive and white bodies will fill the lounge chairs under the Hilton by mid-morning.
